Gypsy Family Farm is currently involved in testing the product of a fairly large scale (no pun intended) fish composting experiment. Mike Meeker of Manitoulin Island runs a large aquaculture business. He raises rainbow trout in Lake Wolsey. An unfortunate by-product of this type of operation is dead fish. Mike has done extensive research and has established a method of combining his fish waste with sawdust (also a Manitoulin waste product) to create an incredibly rich compost. This is done in cement mixing trucks and is closely monitored and controlled at all stages of the process. The resultant compost was used on test plots on our farm this summer with stunning results. Stay tuned for more on this topic.

Hillbilly potato-leaf tomatoes!
This year we grew 46 varieties of tomatoes, many heirlooms. One of our greatest surprises came from the hillbilly potato-leaf tomatoes (pictured above). Our largest weighed 3lb 1oz. The interior is a swirl of red/pink/yellow colours and there are not too many seeds. The best part was the flavour! We will be growing these again. Disappointments included white tomatoes (low flavour but also low acid, so some customers loved 'em) and all varieties of "early" slicers. We have yet to find a variety of really early tomato with a worthwhile flavour. Any suggestions?
